East Cape

For New Years we went in search of some surf waves, snorkeling and beach camping on the East Cape. This is the part of the peninsula that rounds the corner into the Sea of Cortez. There is a road that is mostly dirt between San Jose del Cabo and Los Barriles/La Ribera that goes past several gorgeous beaches. After a wrong turn onto a super 4×4 road we got onto the right dirt road called the East Cape Highway. The first night we camped at Nine Palms. After setting up camp, Miles and Dave went out to surf as there was a little break. Dave struggled a bit and Miles caught wave after wave. You could say he has surpassed Dave’s ability at this point. 😂

The next day was New Year’s Eve and we went to check out Cabo Pulmo. (First we went to La Ribera for lunch. We also tried to stop by and say hi to Jeremy’s parents who live there but they didn’t seem to be home) This was our third time here and we’ve never hit good weather. This time was no exception, however, we did put on wetsuits and try to snorkel at Los Arbolitos where we were camped for the night. It was super windy which made the water pretty choppy. Ollie wasn’t having it so Fin took him in while Miles and I stayed out a little while longer. This spot is the only coral reef in the Sea of Cortez and the snorkeling and diving is supposed to be great. We did see a lot of different fish and some of the coral but we had to pay attention not to get pushed into the rocks by the waves so it wasn’t super relaxing. I’m glad we went out though. At this camp me met Sandie and Karsten from Germany traveling in their huge Unimog thing, a guy from Spain traveling in his Sprinter, a family from Guadalajara in a pick up with a rooftop tent and a guy from California in his mini Transit van. We ran the gamut of overland vehicles all at one beach. As usual we went to bed at Baja Midnight and didn’t even try to stay up until the new year.

Our third night was spent at Playa La Fortuna, another surf break beach. We pulled up to scout out a spot and as we were walking along the beach we passed some friends from Stanley, Annie Burd and her boyfriend Jeff. Totally random! We ended up camping just down the beach from them. The kids dug a hole in the sand that was deeper than Miles, but it got too deep and caved in. Miles was legitimately stuck in the hole and we had to dig him out. Miles also tried to surf this break but ended up getting chundered in the rocks, so he didn’t stay in as long as he usually does.
